Material With A Memory

In reading Material with a Memory we start to see how much of an influence the actual cloth has on us today and not just the clothing itself. Jacob states that “Cloth persists as a medium of personal meaning -making and cultural memory. ” We see the social realties that are embedded to cloth and clothing. Jacob talks about three different artists whose work was created for an annual arts event and was based around the idea of cloth. I loved reading about each artist and their influences and inspirations behind using cloth in their art. The idea of Puett’s art evoking a universal story of female power really stuck out to me. She thought that cloth had a regenerative power and as a southerner she wanted to retell and sustain history. What I really took away from this reading was how much meaning can be behind a cloth and how it truly is a form of communication and expression.
